Grass is always geener, eh?
We do need another pass rusher. My concern would be chemistry at this point.
Agent says Ellis open to reserve role
DALLAS -- The agent for Greg Ellis said the veteran pass rusher is open to returning to the Dallas Cowboys.
Ellis, just one season into a two-year deal with the Oakland Raiders, was released Monday, saving the team $2.5 million. Ellis tied for the team lead with seven sacks last season while playing defensive end, but he was hampered by knee and shoulder problems during the second half of the season.
Ellis' agent, James Williams, said Tuesday night his client is open to returning to the Cowboys, who drafted him in the first round in 1998. He still is eighth in franchise history with 77 sacks.
Williams said Ellis is open to coming off the bench, something that bothered the outside linebacker at the end of his tenure in Dallas.
Ellis and the Cowboys parted ways last spring, as the team wanted to give Anthony Spencer the full-time job at outside linebacker.
Spencer emerged with six sacks, 36 quarterback pressures and a team-leading nine tackles for loss.
The Cowboys could use Ellis as a third-down pass rusher, something coach Wade Phillips was trying to get him to do when he was here.

| Spencer just started to step up last year with Ellis gone. To bring him back would retard the progress. I vote no. |

I like the idea of having that depth, but at what cost?
And what about Butler? I'd rather see him get some more time. He made some key plays on third downs. |

The reason Ellis was let go was because he was having some serious knee problems near the end of last year. Supposedly needs an operation in the off-season.
As much as Ware missed having Ellis on the other side, at his age, with a gimp knee, I'm not sure he could be effective enough to make much difference. |

| Depth is good, but he would really have to be a backup, and be paid like one. |

If we are one player away and he is that player, YES.
Otherwise, no. Brooking runs the lockerroom. |

Ding ding ding. Butler showed that he could play and he was in the game during some pivotal plays. Probably gave us the win in philly. I want a bunch of no name role guys to fill out this team with maybe a known guy on both sides of the line. |

none of us can possibly know the answer to this. If Ellis is willing to come back and play a backup role and play for peanuts and he is in the right frame of mind, then I think it can be a smart move. ONLY the coaches can know the answer to his frame of mind and his price. |
